It's time you make peace with your mind.
It’s rightly said “Take care of your body; it’s the only place you live in for your whole life.” Taking care doesn’t always mean taking care of the outers but it’s also about taking care of your inner soul and your mind."
What is mental health?
Mental health is a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of mental illness. It is the "psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment". From the perspective of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life, and create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others." The WHO further states that the well-being of an individual is encompassed in the realization of their abilities, coping with normal stresses of life, productive work and contribution to their community. Cultural differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all affect how "mental health" is defined. A widely accepted definition of health by mental health specialists is psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's definition: the capacity "to work and to love".
When it comes to taking care of the outers, our physical body, we don’t hinge to rush to anyone who’ll help bettering it. But, when it comes to taking care of the soul and mind, we shilly-shally.
Why choose counseling?
Many young people use counseling every year for many different things. Sometimes just talking to someone away from your family or friends and who is trained in listening and supporting young people can be easier.
Counseling has been found to help young people experiencing a wide range of difficulties. These include:
- Feeling depressed or anxious
- Low self esteem
- Self harm
- Being bullied
- Family breakup and divorce
- Stress
- Abuse
- Bereavement
- Anger control problems
- Worries about money, education and employment.
Our mental health stands at equal importance just as our physical health does. So, coming to the rescue are our mental health counselors.
How does mental health counseling help?
People with mental health conditions often find psychotherapy-or "talk therapy"-very helpful. The type and length of your therapy will depend on your personal situation and insurance, and your therapy may be part of an overall treatment plan that includes medication or other treatment options.
Talking with a therapist or counselor can help you deal with thoughts, behaviors, symptoms, stresses, goals, past experiences and other areas that can promote your recovery. Of course, talking with a therapist about personal issues can be tough, but it can help you come to grips with problems in your life. It can also offer an emotional release and a sense of really being heard, understood and supported.
Therapy can help you to:
- Feel stronger in the face of challenges
- Change behaviors that hold you back
- Look at ways of thinking that affect how you feel
- Heal pains from the past
- Build relationship skills
- Figure out your goals
- Strengthen your self-confidence
- Cope with symptoms\
- Handle strong emotions like fear, grief or anger
- Enhance your problem solving skills
So, don’t shilly-shally, Take care of your mind just as you take care of your body.
