ALCOHOL AND BREAST CANCER
Alcohol, as we know, is a recreational drug used solely for the purpose of the pleasure of intoxication.
Alcohol, a temporary mood lifter can cause permanent brain damage if consumed in amounts unhealthy for the body. It is also one of the causes of breast cancer.
Many research studies show that drinking alcoholic beverages – beer, wine and liquor increases a woman’s risk of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer by damaging the DNA in cells. Let’s understand how by the following points:
- Alcohol is broken down into a toxic chemical called acetaldehyde in the body. Acetaldehyde can damage the DNA inside our cells and may also hinder the repairing process of DNA.
- Alcohol has the potential of increasing the levels of certain hormones in the body, including estrogen. And as we all know, high levels of estrogen can fuel the development of breast cancer.
Research studies show that alcohol plays a major role in the development of breast cancer. The best way to treat it is by limiting the intake of alcohol or completely stopping the intake of alcohol.
Adopt the following steps:
- Start by limiting the intake to two or fewer drinks per week.
- If you’re not sure about controlling the urge in social gatherings, you can avoid going at such places till you get back on track.
- Go for other tasty drinks that don’t involve alcohol like mocktails.
- If you like having fizzy drinks then try this method at home - freeze your favorite juice in an ice tray and use them as ice cubes in a pint glass of club soda. This can be a good alternative to alcohol but soda too is bad for health.
- Calculate the amount of alcohol in your drink by keeping a check on the different glasses or bottles used.
- Swap strong beers or wine for ones with a lower strength (ABV- Alcohol by Volume).
- Keep an alcohol free day at least once or twice a week.
- Indulge in other activities and socialize with family and friends to distract yourself.
- Leading a physically active lifestyle by exercising, walking or jogging.
Visit your doctor for regular checkups.
The best advice is to be active, maintain a healthy weight and limit alcohol and always remember, a temporary pleasure can cause permanent damage.
