LUNG SURGERY

 


Description

Lung surgery is of several types and those include:

Lung Biopsy: Conducting biopsy of an unknown growth

Lobectomy:
Lobectomy is a surgery to remove the lobe of a lung.  

Lung Transplant: Done in cases of chronic lung failure.

Wedge resection: To remove a part of the lung.

Pre Procedure

- The patient will be given general anaesthesia before the surgery is performed.

- The patient also has to undergo a number of tests in order to figure out if the patient is suitable for the surgery.

During Proceducre

- Thoracotomy and VATS (Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery) are the two types of surgery used.

- Thoracotomy: A procedure that involves open surgery where an incision is made in the chest to obtain access to the lung. The part of the lung to be removed depends on the damage occurred to the part of the lung. Lymph nodes may also be removed.

- Video Assisted Thoracoscopic surgery: Several cuts are made on the chest wall. A videoscope is inserted along with other tools. Either a part of lung or the entire lung is removed depending on the damage.

Post Procedure

 - - The patient shall be asked to stay in the hospital.

- The patient shall also receive pain relieving medicines through an IV tube in a controlled manner.

- Deep breathing exercises are encouraged in order to help the patient?s lung get fully inflated.

Risk Complication

Sudden complications include shock, pneumonia and embolism
