What is anxiety?

A crippling sense of fear that often is accompanied by nervousness, excessive worry and physical symptoms.

Now you may wonder what the cause of anxiety is! Anxiety may be caused due to several reasons. There is a certain level of difference between anxiety and anxiety disorders.

Anxiety arises when you are facing any situation that instills worry within you. Anxiety to some level is normal for it pushes you to work – acts as a motivator, but, if it affects your day to day functioning, then for sure it is not normal.

A hormone “adrenaline” in our body is responsible for the fight or flight reaction in the body. It is still essential for survival as the body senses a source of perceived threat and prepares either to physically confront the situation or move towards safety.

Here are some tips to follow if you face anxiety periodically:

1. First and foremost, it is necessary to get in touch with an experienced mental health professional or a therapist. These individuals can help you get out of your situation by helping you with techniques which help you cope with fearful situations better.

2. A fear becomes overwhelming unless you face it. Once you face the fear the grip of it over you lessens. A certified therapist should be there to counsel each and every time to help you overcome the situation.

3. Exercise, exercise and exercise is one of the best ways to overcome anxiety. Walking or exercising boosts ‘endorphins’, which are the ‘feel-good’ hormones. Research has shown that exercise significantly helps reduce Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

4. Reduce caffeine intake - Caffeine in excess can cause jittery feelings and increase anxiety too. Gradually stop the intake of caffeine and caffeine rich foods. Sounds small but does help!

5. Meditate, breathe and release all the tensions.Yoga has immense power ! No, not exactly like a magic wand, but yes, consistently practicing yoga can reduce feelings of anxiety and worry and help manage stress better. It is known that yoga has such calming effects on the brain that it can change the structure of the brain within 8 weeks!

So, you need to know that anxiety as a condition or even a disorder can be managed if you approach it the right way.

Lastly, do not give up. Things may seem unsettling for some time, but the ray of hope lies ahead of your struggles!
