What is cupping therapy and why people use it?

A fast-paced lifestyle that leaves little to no time for sports and exercise has taken a toll on our bodies.

Today, people are looking for ways to relax their minds and bodies and, thus, cupping therapy has made its name the top technique in the massage world. Cupping is a technique that was developed thousands of years ago and has its own philosophy of healing. It is believed that when the energies in our body are blocked due to any reason, it results in diseases. Hence, cupping believes in increasing the blood flow to remove the energy blockages and energize the skin. The restoration of the flow of positive energy results in a healthier body.

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping is an ancient therapy in which small glass cups are heated and placed on the bare skin. An inflammable substance, like alcohol, is placed inside the cup and burned. The cup used could be glass, bamboo, earthenware, or silicone. As soon as the substance is completely burnt, the cup is placed upside down on the skin. Once the air inside the cup cools, a vacuum is created inside the cup. The cup is then left in place for about 3 minutes. This causes the skin to receive a much higher blood supply, leading to the classic reddish-blue appearance of the treated skin. The redness is caused by the expansion of underlying blood vessels.

Cupping therapy can be done in two ways. One is dry cupping and the second is wet cupping. In both these types, the procedure is the same, but in wet cupping therapy, after removing the cup, a very tiny cut is made on the skin with a scalpel and a second suction process is done. This draws out a small amount of blood.

Why do people use cupping therapy?

People use this therapy because of its relaxing effects on the body. The vacuum creates suction, and this suction leads to increased blood flow in that area. This relaxes the muscles and tissues and sedates the central nervous system for a short period of time. Another reason for the global fame of this therapy is its usefulness in pain relief. This therapy provides relief to soft tissues by increasing the blood flow to that area, thus increasing access to oxygen and nutrients. This therapy is done near an area of injury to increase the blood flow around the injury and hence calm the area around the injury.

Cupping is also very beneficial for people who have recurrent colds. This therapy helps in clearing out excess phlegm. It also regulates blood and lymphatic fluid flow throughout the body, which boosts immunity.

Cupping therapy has been found to be very effective in people with skin problems. It helps in reducing skin inflammation, acne, herpes breakout, and cellulite. It is also helpful for eczema. In these cases, the cups are moved around the body to provide a massage-like experience.

Are there any drawbacks?

The biggest demerit of poor blood circulation is that toxins accumulate inside the body tissues. Cupping is very effective in this scenario as increased blood regulation leads to the rapid elimination of the toxins in the blood. Along with toxins, the blood also carries away dead cells. Wet cupping is considered better for detoxifying the body for this reason.

The next time you are tired and looking at relaxing your muscles, you can opt for cupping therapy from a close by a specialist. The purple marks the cups leave behind will give you a new point of conversation with your friends while you relax and enjoy the benefits of this ancient therapy.
