Description

Face transplant is a surgery that is done for those people who suffer from any facial disfigurement. It involves the removal of a part or all of an individual’s face by making use of donor tissue from someone who is no longer living (the tissue of a dead persons face).

It is a complex procedure and involves many surgical teams and months of preparation.

A face transplant surgery is performed when:

- Any person is badly disfigured by burns, facial trauma or any congenital defects.

- Any person wishes to improve the form and functional abilities such as talking, swallowing, chewing and breathing through the nose.

A face transplant is a high-risk surgery that shall give the person a totally new face. The patient shall be put on certain medications to reduce the possibility of the face transplant being rejected.

 

Pre Procedure

- The patient should not be pregnant.

- The patient should not be a drug addict or alcoholic.

- Certain tests such as MRI and X-ray are done to determine the physical health of the patient.

Before the procedure the doctor should consider the:

- Tissue type

- Blood type

- Skin complexion


During Procedure

- The duration or the time period required for the surgery depends on how much of the face tissues and underlying structures are involved. It may take from about 10-30 hours.

- During the surgery, the doctor may transplant several tissues of the donor such as fat, skin, muscles and cartilage


Post Procedure

- The patient shall be given medicines to reduce pain.

- The patient shall also be given immunosuppressant drugs so that the body does not reject the transplanted face.

- The patient is fed through a tube.

 

Risk Complications

- The procedure is full of risk? Is complex and a lengthy procedure that can be life-threatening because of the chances substantial blood loss, infection and blood clot?

- Another risk involved in the rejection of the facial transplant.
