Low blood pressure can strike you hard
Hypotension or low blood pressure isn't the same as hypertension, yet is no less serious wellbeing difficulty. A drop in your blood pressure is not so usually characterized by dizziness, fatigue, nausea or trouble in relaxing. Majority are clueless regarding what to do when your blood pressure dips.
Causes of Low Blood Pressure:
- Emotional instability.
- Frustration.
- Disappointments.
- Poor Diet – vitamin, protein and mineral deficiency.
- Dehydration.
Symptoms:
- Unexpected weakness.
- Blurred vision.
- Giddiness.
- Dryness of mouth.
- Sudden fall and unconsciousness
What to do during an emergency for low blood pressure.
Lie Down: The minute you experience any giddiness, or some other side effect of low blood pressure, lie down on a flat surface. Close your eyes for a couple of minutes or until that point of time when you feel your giddiness has disappeared.
Have ORS: Oral rehydration salts or ORS rehydrates the body as well as providing salt and electrolytes, which helps in keeping up the electrolyte balance. Cut up a sachet of ORS and drink. However, if you suffer diabetes, avoid taking ORS as it contains sugar.
Drink water: If ORS is unavailable, you can drink plain water also. You can even add a pinch of salt and sugar to it. Sodium in the salt improves your blood pressure while sugar helps in re-establishing the glucose level (if caused because of low blood glucose or hypoglycaemia).
Lick salt: A typical practice that many people follow is to lick salt or eat salty food to enhance the body's salt content, which settles your blood pressure. You can even drink a glass of salt water (add 1/4th teaspoon of salt in a glass of water) to reestablish your blood pressure. But make sure not to eat or drink excess salt as it may lead to high blood pressure.
When you feel your blood pressure has normalized, consult your specialist immediately to diagnose the correct reason. Many people have a tendency to ignore this and consult your specialist when their blood pressure is truly low. You should test your blood pressure regularly. A person may not show any signs of weight fall, but when it reaches 110/60 mm Hg, then it’s imperative to visit a doctor at the earliest and avoid self-medication.
