BREAST CANCER SURGERY
Description:
A breast surgery is done in order to remove the cancer tumour. It is also performed to determine if the tumour is malignant or benign and at which stage the cancer is.
There are many types of Breast Cancer surgery:
Lumpectomy: In this surgery, only the tumour and some of the nearby margin area is removed. At times, the lymph nodes are also removed. This surgery is suitable for women who have small breasts. The procedure is not long enough and takes about just an hour. The patient shall be given discharge on the same day.
Mastectomy is of two types:
- Partial Mastectomy:In this procedure, more tissue is removed than in lumpectomy. The tumour and healthy tissue around it are also removed.
- Total Mastectomy:The entire breast is removed including the nipple, areola and sentinel lymph nodes. This surgery helps in eliminating the chances of cancer reoccurring.
- Modified Radical Cystectomy: In this the breast is removed along with some lymph nodes in the armpit. The chest muscles however aren?t removed.
- Axillary LN dissection: The surgery is performed in order to remove the axillary nodes from the underarms to determine whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.
The procedure usually takes 2-3 hours but the recovery is prolonged.
Pre Procedure
- The patient has to consult the doctor in order to determine if they have a choice between lumpectomy and mastectomy.
- Some tests are recommended before the procedure such as X-ray, blood tests and ECG.
- The patient is also advised to not drink or eat anything before the procedure.
During Procedure
- The surgery is performed under the influence of anaesthesia.
- If the cancer has spread to a wider area then a mastectomy is recommended.
- In the procedure of lumpectomy, sometimes a larger area is removed and the affected breast becomes smaller than the other breast.
Post Procedure
The patient is given pain killers in order to relieve the pain.Risk Complications
Risk Complication
- During surgery: If the surgery is extensive, then chances of bleeding are high.
- After surgery: Wound infections are curable by antibiotics. In hematoma the blood accumulates in the wound area around the blood vessels whereas in serotoma the fluid accumulates in the wound area.
