Get relief from Sinus

Do you ever feel a sudden pain in your nose, or eyes, or your half-head just won’t stop banging? If yes then you have a sinus problem. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the tissue that lines these cavities. In some cases, this swelling blocks off the sinuses, trapping mucus and air inside them. This can cause pain and pressure. Sometimes, it can lead to a bacterial infection.

Types

Nasal swelling and a build-up of mucus are always involved in Sinusitis but yet again there are several types and they all work differently.

The different types are:

Acute sinusitis: This is the most common type and it lasts around 4 weeks

Sub-acute sinusitis: For this type, the symptoms stay longer as compared to the normal acute period, between 4 and 12 weeks.

Chronic sinusitis: In this, the Symptoms either persist or continually return, after 12 weeks. Treatment can be invasive and may need surgery.

Symptoms

The symptoms of sinus may vary upon the severity of the infection or the type of sinus.

• facial pain and pressure

• blocked nose

• nasal discharge

• reduced sense of smell

• congestion

• cough

In more advanced cases, the following symptoms may also be present:

• fever

• halitosis, or foul-smelling breath

• tiredness

• toothache

• headache

If these symptoms continue for 12 weeks or longer, the doctor may diagnose chronic sinusitis.

Causes

There are factors that take part in the growth of Sinusitis, but it always results from fluid becoming trapped in the sinuses.  This works like a fuel for germs to grow.

Viruses: In adults, 90 percent of cases of sinusitis result from a virus

Bacteria: In adults, 1 case in 10 is caused by bacteria

Pollutants: The buildup of mucus can be triggered due to the chemicals or irritants in the air.

Fungi: The sinuses either react to fungi in the air, as in allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS), or they are invaded by fungi, as in chronic indolent sinusitis.

Acute and sub-acute sinusitis

Well, the good news is that most acute cases don’t need treatment as are self-healing.

However, sinusitis can make you super restless so most people end up using certain home remedies or over-the-counter (OTC) medications to relieve symptoms.

In the following cases, it is recommended to visit a doctor:

• Symptoms persist longer than 7 to 10 days.

• The fever level is higher than 101.5°

• Headache that is not resolved even after taking medicines.

• Problem in vision or swelling around the eyes.

• Reoccurring symptoms after taking antibiotics prescribed by a physician.

If the sinusitis has a bacterial cause, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics. If symptoms repeat after the medication course is finished then make sure you visit your doctor again.

Chronic sinusitis

Antibiotics won’t really resolve the symptoms for chronic sinusitis as they are not bacterial in nature. Corticosteroid sprays can help in recurrent cases, but these need a prescription and medical supervision.

In allergic sinusitis, treating allergies with shots or reducing and avoiding exposure to allergens like animal dander or mold can lessen the occurrence of chronic sinusitis.

Prevention

The following may help prevent sinusitis:

• Maintain good hand hygiene.

• Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke.

• Keep vaccinations up to date.

• Maintain a distance from people having cold and other respiratory infections.

• Use a humidifier to moisten the air at home, and keep it clean. A selection of humidifiers is available for purchase online.

• Maintain air conditioning units to prevent mold and dust from collecting.

• If possible avoid allergens.

Home remedies to treat sinus -

Certain home remedies can treat sinus that is less severe or recurrent cases of sinusitis without the need to visit a doctor. These remedies will help in reducing the pain and unblock the sinuses to allow proper drainage.

Nasal irrigation: Also known as sinus irrigation or sinus rinse this home procedure involves rinsing and clearing the nasal passages with salt water or a saline solution.

Warm compress: Applying a warm pack delicately to the affected areas of the face can relieve some swelling and inconvenience.

Painkillers: These comfort the symptoms of pain and fever.

Steam inhalation: Breathing hot, moist air can provide relief from congestion. At home, steam from a bowl of hot water, possibly with some drops of essential menthol or eucalyptus oil, can help unblock the sinuses. Essential oils should not be applied directly or swallowed.

Hydration and rest: Drinking fluids regularly and avoiding overexertion can help the symptoms to pass.
