OVARIAN CANCER SURGERY
Description
Ovarian cancer surgery is a surgery that is used as a
primary treatment for removal of the cancerous tumor present in the ovaries.
The extent of the surgery depends on the spread of cancer
and the patient’s general health.
The surgery involves the removal of one or both of the
ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus.
Certain other surgeries have to be performed such as:
- The removal of the uterus (Hysterectomy)
- Appendectomy (removing the appendix)
- Omentectomy (The fat that covers the intestines is
removed)
- Splenectomy (Removal of the spleen)
The patient may experience abdominal pain, experience loss
of constipation or loss of appetite or abnormal weight loss/weight gain.

Minimally-invasive surgery: Many small incisions are made
into the abdomen and the laparoscope along with the surgical instruments is
inserted.
- The samples from the areas of the abdomen, pelvis and
lymph nodes are taken to check the spread of tumor.
- The layer of fat near the intestine is also removed to
find cancerous cells.
- If the cancer cells have spread over a region then the
surgeon will remove as much of the tumor possible. The procedure is called as debunking.
