Home Remedies to Treat Constipation
Constipation is one of the most common medical problems faced by millions of people around the world.
At times, constipation can be a symptom of various health issues rather than a disease itself. It can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as discomfort, abdominal bloating, and pain. 1. More Fluid Intake –
Inadequate hydration can result in constipation. People suffering from constipation are often told to increase the intake of fiber in their diets. It is advised to consume soluble, non-fermentable fiber such as wheat bran, vegetables, and whole grains.
3. Laxatives –
There are different types of laxatives that can be effective for constipation. Such as:
1. Bulking agents – these are fiber-based laxatives used to increase the water content of the stool. E.g.: Psyllium husk
2. Stool softener – It contains oils to soften the stools and ease their passage through the gut.
3. Stimulant laxatives – these stimulate the nerves in the gut to increase bowel movements.
4. Osmotic laxative – it softens the stool by pulling water from the surrounding tissues into the digestive system.
4. Mint or Ginger Tea –
Mint and ginger both have proven home remedies to help alleviate many digestive problems. Mint has an antispasmodic effect that relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract. Ginger is a ‘warming’ herb that causes the inside of the body to generate more heat and hence, speed up sluggish digestion. Using both of the ingredients in the tea form will stimulate digestion and provide constipation relief.
5. Ayurveda –
Triphala is a type of ayurvedic tablet that is made of Harad also known as black myrobalan. It works as a fantastic laxative and has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic properties. Hence, it works as a great form of treatment for diarrhea and other kinds of infections as well.
Tip: warm water and mix one spoon of Triphala powder and drink it. Do not eat or drink anything after it.
6. Exercise –
Studies have shown constipated people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) had reduced symptoms by doing regular exercise. To avoid the sleepy feeling after a heavy meal, one should try to move around instead of lying down.
Tip: Talk a 15-minute walk daily to ease your bowel movements. At times an activity is required to kick-start your day!
