Sex Addiction

Sexual addiction is best described as a progressive intimacy disorder, characterized by compulsive or obsessive sexual thoughts. A sex addict can be identified by his/her weird behavior. But a sex addict is a sex addict, right? Is there a need to differentiate them into several categories? Yes, we need to differentiate because sex addicts of different types depict different behaviors that are harmful to people, and understanding these characteristics can help identify them. The following are the categories in which sex addicts can be characterized.

  • Voyeurism or Exhibitionists:-

Recently, on many occasions in different parts of India, a few Uber cab drivers flashed their genitals and masturbated in front of the passengers. Soon these drivers were barred from getting access to the Uber app as a part of the company’s strict guidelines. These sex addicts are Exhibitionists, who are sexually turned on by flashing their genitals to people. Voyeurism, on the other hand, is the practice of getting sexually aroused by watching others naked or performing sexual acts, usually without their consent. Such addicts are aroused when the victim is in an awkwardly intimate position like undressing, showering, or indulging in sex.

  • Exploitative Sex:-

Exploitative Sex addicts gain sexual pleasure by forcing the other person to engage in sexual activity. This usually ends in rape. One person violates another person’s human rights and there is absolutely no scope of genuine love.

  • Intrusive Sex:-

Have you ever felt your breasts caressed in a crowded area? Has anyone intentionally fondled your genitals? If yes, then you have come across an intrusive sex addict. Intrusive sex involves touching others, without permission. These types of sex addicts can also be found in schools, institutes, offices, and residential areas, as it often involves a person misusing his/her position of power and authority.

  • Pornography addiction:-

As per a recent study, 90 percent of young boys and middle-aged men and 60 percent of young girls are exposed to porn. Out of them, 50 percent of men and 20 percent of women are addicted to porn. These people turn to porn obsessively. They spend long hours watching it and even watch it in inappropriate places such as public places or offices. The worst part is that it triggers an urge to masturbate and get addicted to masturbation as well.

  • Sadomasochism or Pain exchange:-

Here, the perpetrator is sexually aroused by humiliating or causing physical pain to his partner. The addict associates pain with sexual pleasure and even has a fetish for certain body parts or an object that forms sexual gratification.

  • Anonymous Sex addict:-

A casual encounter with strangers is usually an uncommon sight. But this is what these addicts do. Phone sex, one night stands, especially at late-night parties, define anonymous sex addicts. A sexual encounter with strangers turns them on.

  • Paying for sex:-

Here the addicts take the services of sex workers and pay them after having sex with them. They are always at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases as both indulge in sex with multiple partners.

  • Sex for trade:-

Sex for trade may sound a little awkward but it happens. Sex for trade is when the addict receives payment for sex although payment received might not be limited only to money; it can come in the form of goods, services, drugs, and shelter as well. In such a case, sex becomes a mere commodity rather than a personal experience.

Be careful of such addicts and if you find someone with these symptoms, report it to the appropriate person or take him/her in confidence and try to help him/her come out of the addiction.

Beware of sex addicts and report any misconduct.
