CERVICAL SPINE SURGERY

 



Description:

The Cervical Spine surgery is a medical procedure that is meant to correct the chronic neck or back painthe patient is suffering from. The procedure involves the removal of the vertebral fractures, spinal stenosis and bone spurs.

There are many types of spine surgery:

- Laminectomy

- Spinal Fusion

- Foraminotomy

- Disc Replacement

A spine surgery is indicated in those conditions when the patient loses the ability to hold in faeces or progressive weakness in the legs or there is severe and constant pain in the abdomen and the back.

Pre Procedure

If the body is kept in good shape before the surgery, then chances are that the recovery period is shortened. Patients are prescribed a dose of painkillers after the surgery in order to control the pain. Additionally, the patient is advised to stop smoking as it can increase the risk of spinal problems.

During Procedure

 - Spinal Fusion: It is one of the most common surgeries. An intervertebral disc is removed and replaced by a titanium cage. The bone grafts are joined together and fused together over a period of time. It is done in order to relieve pressure from the spine.

- Foraminotomy: The bone at the side of the vertebrae is cut in order to broaden the space at the points of exit of the nerves from the spinal cord. It can result in instability of the spine.

- Laminectomy: This procedure involves the removal of the bone overgrowths or ligaments in order to relieve the pressure on the nerves entering and exiting the spinal cord.  

- Diskectomy: This procedure is adopted to remove the herniated or slipped disc in order to relieve the pressure from the spinal nerves.

- Disc Replacement: This surgery includes the damaged disk in the spine being replaced by an artificial disk between the vertebrae.

- Cervical Spine Surgery: A decompression surgery along with a fusion surgery is carried out to relieve the pain and pressure.

Post Procedure

- After the surgery, the patient has to take the prescribed dose of painkillers regularly.

- The patient is also advised proper rest and also to avoid smoking and alcohol.

- The patient has to avoid prolonged sitting and maintain a healthy diet.

Risk Complications

- There can be reactions to anaesthetic medicines.

- Nerve damage.

- Persistent pain.
