CHEMOTHERAPY
Description
Chemotherapy is a treatment which is given to cancer
patients in order to get rid of fast multiplying cancer cells. The drugs used
in this therapy are called as chemotherapeutic drugs.
Certain types of chemotherapy procedures are followed:
- Combined Modality Chemotherapy
Neo-adjuvant Chemotherapy: The chemotherapy is given before
the surgery in order to reduce the size of tumour.
Adjuvant Chemotherapy: The chemotherapy that is given after
the surgery.
Concurrent Chemotherapy: This chemotherapy is given after
the patient receives radiation therapy.
- Curative Chemotherapy: It aims to cure the cancer or
eliminate all the cancerous cells.
- Palliative Chemotherapy: It is done in order to improve
the quality of life.
Pre Procedure
- Certain tests are conducted in order to determine if the
body is ready for chemotherapy.
- Certain dental infections are also checked for.
During Procedure
- - The chemotherapy drugs are given via an intravenous line
or a chemo port.
- It is administered under the influence of a paramedical
staff.
- The doctor (oncologist) shall decide which form of
chemotherapy should be given based on the age, site of cancer and other
parameters.
Post Procedure
Chemotherapy can lead to a low blood count and can cause
fever.
Risk Complications
Chemotherapy can have many side effects such as:
- Fatigue and tiredness, pain, loss of appetite and loss of
taste.
- It can even result in Neutropenia, oral ulcers and
constipation.
