BACK PAIN SURGERY

Description

Back pain surgery is performed in those situations when the patient is suffering from chronic neck pain or back pain. The procedure involves the removal of the vertebral fractures, spinal stenosis and bone spurs.

There are many types of spine surgery:

- Laminectomy

- Spinal Fusion

- Foraminotomy

- Disc Replacement

A spine surgery is indicated in those conditions when the patient loses the ability to hold in faces or progressive weakness in the legs or there is severe and constant pain in the abdomen and the back.

Pre Procedure

If the body is kept in good shape before the surgery, then chances are that the recovery period is shortened. Patients are prescribed a dose of painkillers after the surgery in order to control the pain. Additionally, the patient is advised to stop smoking as it can increase the risk of spinal problems.

During Procedure

- Spinal Fusion: It is one of the most common surgeries. An intervertebral disc is removed and replaced by a titanium cage. The bone grafts are joined together and fused together over a period of time. It is done in order to relieve pressure from the spine.

- Foraminotomy: The bone at the side of the vertebrae is cut in order to broaden the space at the points of exit of the nerves from the spinal cord. It can result in instability of the spine.

Post Procedure

- After the surgery, the patient has to take the prescribed dose of painkillers regularly.

- The patient is also advised proper rest and also to avoid smoking and alcohol.

- The patient has to avoid prolonged sitting and maintain a healthy diet.

Risk Complications

- There can be reactions to anesthetic medicines.

- Nerve damage.

- Persistent pain.
